Kate Rosch  Volunteer Spotlight

“I have volunteered with Furry Friends since December 2024,” Kate says.

“I worked as an Animal Care Technician at Oregon Humane Society, and continued there as an Animal Care volunteer for some time after I changed careers. Eventually, though, I wanted to contribute to the welfare of pets in my community as a Vancouver native. I knew of Furry Friends through the relationship Oregon Humane Society had with them, and so I inquired about volunteer opportunities here.

“I am a Shelter Assistant, helping with the daily care and cleaning of the cats at the Halfway House. I work there for two hours a week on Tuesday evenings, and often put in extra hours over the weekends when medical days are held, assisting with medical treatments.

“My favorite part about volunteering is being able to provide care and comfort to those cats waiting to find their forever homes. Since being in a shelter is often a stressful experience for them, my goal is to make it as pleasant as possible, and ensure that they always feel loved. My happiest and proudest moments, I admit, are when when long-term kitties find their perfect matches. On the other hand, my biggest challenge is remembering to always practice patience. Pets don’t always operate on our timeline!

“I give back because I believe that it’s important to look outside of ourselves and give back to causes that benefit our world and communities whenever possible. The issues I’m most passionate about are overpopulation of domestic pets, particularly cats, and unethical breeding.

“Outside of Furry Friends, I work in Human Resources for a local food chain, have two cats of my own, named Walton and Drexler, and am a regular disc golfer!”
